Grounded Podcast: Episode 40 - New Host Edition

Grounded is back in action! We’re excited to welcome Bryan Hockaday as host, who recently joined the Oregon Department of Energy’s communications team.

In this first episode of the Grounded reboot, join Bryan as he begins his expedition across the state to learn all about energy in Oregon. Starting things off is Grounded creator and former host, Jenny Kalez, who now serves as the department’s Communications Director. Jenny gives an overview of the Oregon Department of Energy (ODOE), and we learn that the agency – among other things – functions as an energy think tank that provides analysis, produces reports, and convenes input from all Oregonians. We also hear about several of the programs that directly help individuals, as well as local communities and business, by keeping energy costs down.

Additionally, we hear about where Oregon gets its energy and how we use it from Stephanie Kruse, a facilities engineer with ODOE. Stephanie describes the sources of sustainable energy produced in Oregon, the sources that are imported from the regional energy market, and how Oregon is on a path to generate 100% emission-free electricity by 2040.

Bryan then welcomes ODOE Director Janine Benner to learn about her vision for the department. Janine clarifies how energy costs to consumers are influenced and what ODOE is doing to help implement and inform long-term polices that ensure Oregonians have access to affordable, reliable, and cleaner energy sources.
